Decide what each camera needs to show
Start by identifying the areas you want to see: perhaps the approach to your front door, a side passage or a driveway. Then explain what you need from each view. Knowing that someone entered a space is different from needing a closer view at a particular point. Those priorities influence camera position and the proposed equipment.
Tell us about trees, parked vehicles and other objects that could obstruct a view. A camera position that looks suitable when the driveway is empty may be less useful during everyday use. We discuss the practical scene rather than selecting cameras solely by their resolution or assuming that one wide view will capture every detail.
Consider daylight and evening conditions
The way an entrance looks during a daytime visit may be different after dark. Existing lights, nearby windows and changes in the direction of light can affect a proposed view. Explain when the area is normally used and whether your concern is mainly daytime activity, evening visitors or periods when the property is empty.
Camera features should be considered against that particular location. Ask what the proposed view is intended to achieve in the conditions at your home. Where additional lighting is part of the discussion, consider how it will affect occupants and neighbours. The quotation should make clear what equipment and work are included rather than leave these details to assumption.
Recording and access to footage
A camera installation needs a recording arrangement that matches its purpose. Discuss where recordings will be held, how you will find a relevant event and who will be able to access the system. Recording capacity depends on the equipment and settings, so a retention period should be discussed as part of the specification.
If you want remote viewing, tell us which devices you expect to use. The proposed system and connectivity need to support that requirement. Agree who will administer accounts and keep access details available to authorised users. At handover, ask to see how to find and retrieve footage rather than only checking the live picture.
Installation in an occupied home
Camera mounting positions, cable routes and power arrangements need to be planned together. Tell us which areas can be accessed and whether any building work is underway. If you are decorating or renovating, discuss the timing before finishes are completed so that installation arrangements can be considered alongside the other work.
For shared entrances or leased properties, establish who can authorise external equipment and cable routes. Let us know if access to a neighbouring or communal area would be required. Proposed views should also be discussed with nearby homes and shared spaces in mind; a useful security view should have a clear purpose.
Upgrading existing cameras
If you already have CCTV, describe what is not working for you. The issue might be an obstructed view, difficulty retrieving recordings or a wish to add another camera. Provide equipment model details if available, but do not assume that every component must be replaced or that everything can be retained.
